Buyong means the lotus flower. The shape of the pond is a square, which represents the earth. The small round island located in the middle of the pond represents the sky. The kings enjoyed boating, fishing and picnics. Sometimes, the king made court musicians perform here.

The windows of Buyongjeong pavilion are covered with a Chinese character, 'ä¬' shape. The letter symbolizes the second Chinese saint, 'Mingzi'. When the king sees this window, he is constantly reminded of Mengzi teaching to be a good ruler.

Chundangdae is the courtyard where civil service exams were held. It is located beside Buyongji. The king sat at Younghwadang and supervised the examinations himself.

Chundangdae was also a place where the king practiced archery. Rituals for rain and banquets were also held here.
